Chinese Butterfly Ombre Silk Scarf.... from the Metropolitan Museum of Art During the course of the Qing dynasty (1644–1911), the banding at the edges of women’s clothing became increasingly more complex. Sleevebands that adorned the wrist openings of garments especially featured intricate decorations and symbols that often represented wishes for future success, longevity, and happiness. The pattern on this Chinese Butterfly Ombré Scarf is adapted from a pair of 19th-century white satin bands embroidered with silk in brilliant jewel-like colors. The originals feature scattered butterflies, long prized in Chinese culture as symbols of joy. Imported silk. 62 in. x 17 in.
